My Cat Has An Over Active Thyroid, Can Someone Advise Re: Pet Insurance?

She’s an elderly cat (18) who was diagnosed yesterday, and started her meds last night. I have found the same medication on the Internet at half the cost but I need a Vets prescription before they will sell. My question is – will the pet insurer pay for cheaper meds bought on Internet, or will they only pay for meds bought from a Vet?

YES, the insurance company is going to pay for the medications purchased over the internet.
As a matter of fact, many insurance company do advertise for the use of internet veterinary pharmacy: It cost them less to pay cheap meds over the net rather than the vet prices.

Also check that your insurance policy covers your cat lifelong. Should your policy be limited to one year, I recommend that you ask your vet about more definitive treatments:
    - Thyroidectomy (surgical removal of the hyperactive thyroid)
    - Radio-active iodine therapy

    Good news and bad news
Yes pet insurance in theory would make your meds much cheaper than from the vets (not sure about the internet).
However most pet insurance companies won’t pay for conditions that are existing BEFORE you sign up! So since your cat has already been diagnosed, you might be out of luck.
Do some reading and make some phonecalls, you might get lucky.

if she is insured they are going to have to pay the vets rate. but they are going to have to pay regardless.
